Juniors in the Jungle - a Big Success!

We couldn't have asked for a nicer day - sunny, cool, and a perfect day for our 2nd Annual Juniors in the Jungle K-12 Race! We had over 75 participants pedaling their way around our specially designed, kid friendly course in Jungle Habitat. From training wheels to teenagers, we had barely a scratched knee as our intrepid racers competed for prizes and medals.

For those of you interested in race results, you can find them by clicking here. We have some pictures posted up on our Flickr pool here. If you have any pictures from the race, we'd love to see them! Send them to us at info@teamtowncycle.com - we'll add them to ours!

The goal of our race was to get our kids out in the woods to ride, so thanks to all of you who came out and joined in the fun! Look for some more kid and family friendly rides coming up in the spring and summer months, as we continue toward our goal of getting our kids out and riding!

Events like this don't happen without a lot of help. Special thanks go to our sponsors! Town Cycle, Trek Bicycles/Jon Sherwood, and ResQtag all donated prizes and time to help make our event a success! Thanks also to NJ Region Bike Patrol, who always keeps us safe at our events, as well as the West Milford First Aid Squad. And last but certainly not least, thanks to all of our Team Town Cycle volunteers for all of their time and effort in putting together such a fun event!

Waywayanda, here we come!

In preparation for the first Campmor H2H race of the season, the Spring Cleaning at Waywayanda State Park in Vernon, NJ on Sunday May 2, we'll have 2 groups going out to pre-ride the course. Of course, you don't have to be racing to join us - anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome!

On both Thursday and Friday, we will have rides meeting at the boat launch parking lot at 5:30 p.m. Both rides will be moderately paced rides, and we'll try to do at least 2 laps of the course. Hopefully by then, the course will have dried out a bit, but you should still be prepared for some mud or standing water.

As always, email us if you have any questions - info@teamtowncycle.com .

Overdue Kudos!

A few race race results we need to acknowledge ...

Tour of the Battenkill - Three of Team Town Cycle's road racers braved the cold and the wind to ride the 62 miles of both dirt and paved roads (generously called "farm roads"!) to represent us well in this New York State spring classic! They had great results for their first year - out of 102 starters in their class, Chris Walsh finished 65th, with a time of 3:28:21, BJ Kisch and Chris Byrnes finished 69th and 70th respectively, with a time of 3:31:02. Nice going, guys!

Singlespeedapalooza - Three Team Town Cycle members braved the elements for this 2 lap, 25 mile long epic in the woods. Mud, rain, full flights of stairs, and did we mention mud? - were just some of the challenges faced by our racers in this event just for those crazy enough to ride a singlespeed through the ups and downs of of Stewart State Forest. Matt Kuchavik, fashionable in his garbage bag rain gear, had a great day, finishing with a time of 2:23:39 for 7th place in the Sport/NJ and South category. Dillon Van Wart, who won a prize for youngest finisher, finished with a malfunctioning seatpost and a time of 2:52:38 for 38th in the Sport/NJ and South category. David Van Wart, our intrepid club president, finished 30th in the Open Men category with a time of 2:17:40.

Congratulations to all of our racers, and thanks for representing Team Town Cycle so well!

Juniors in the Jungle Pre-Ride!

Our Juniors in the Jungle Kids Race (grades k-12) is just around the corner - April 24th! For anyone who would like to check out the race course(s) for the race, come join us this Sunday, April 18 for a pre-ride. Meet us at the gate at Jungle Habitat at 10 a.m., we'll split up into age groups, and check out the course!

Not sure if you are going to race, but want to check it out anyway? Come on down, and bring a friend! We're happy to show everyone around. Just remember everyone must wear a helmet. A geared mountain bike is not necessary for the youngest kids - something with knobby tires should do the trick!

As always, if you have any questions, drop us a line at info@teamtowncycle.com , and we'll be happy to answer.

Weekend activities

The rain should be done today, leaving us a great weekend! First - good luck to those Team Town Cycle riders who are doing the Tour of the Battenkill on Saturday - can't wait to hear about it!

On Sunday, we are having one of our trail maintenance days at Jungle Habitat - meet at the gate at 8:45 a.m for sign in and assignments. Bring water, gloves and practical footwear - we'll supply the tools. For anyone who is interested in a ride after the trail work, bring your bike and we'll take a ride afterwards.

We're working on a very beginner level ride for Sunday as well - check back in for details later today! UPDATE! We'll have a beginners'/newbie ride on Sunday morning at Jungle Habitat - meet us at the gate at 7:30 a.m. No big ride/group experience necessary - we'll take it slow and steady!

Finally, remember our kids race, Juniors in the Jungle, is only 2 weeks away! Mark your calendars for April 24, and bring your favorite kid(s) to join us! More info in the flyer links on the left sidebar.

Photos!

We've been lazy about updating our photo page, but we finally have some new pics! Click on the Flickr link on the left sidebar, and check out the photos from our Easter Bunny ride this past Sunday. There is also a set of photos from this week's Augusta Training Series race - a nice showing by Team Town Cycle!

If you are talented enough to take pictures and ride, send them to us - we're happy to include them in our photo pool! Extra points if it involves embarrassing wardrobe choices or non-injury related crashes!

NYNJ Trail Conference Trail Work, April 3

Please read the message below from Jeff Mergler, Executive Director of JORBA and all around nice guy. We'll try to keep you updated on future NYNJ Trail conference dates - as Jeff says, the better our relationships with groups like these become, the more likely they will be supportive of multi- use trails.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks, if you would like to help out one of the Trail Conference crews this Saturday, they are working in Norvin Green as described below.

Full disclosure: this is a hiking only trail. If you have a problem with that, don't take it out on Karen or her husband Frank who are leading the crews. Karen and Frank are great people, own bikes themselves and are very supportive of multi-use. They just happen to work in Norvin Green which has a hiking only designation. That is not their doing or fault.

In any case, if you do enjoy Norvin Green by foot I wanted to pass this along to you. I am also a Delegate at Large on the NYNJ Trail Conference and I want to stress that there are a good number of folks in that organization that are sympathetic to multi-use trails and our relationships are getting better every year. It is for this reason that I want to offer this opportunity to our volunteers in case they are so inclined to help. Please support Karen and Frank if you can.

Happy Trails,
Jeff Mergler
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will be out THIS SATURDAY April 3rd to cut the remaining section of the Manaticut Point Connector trail located in upper Norvin Green State Park. Please feel free to join us.

We will meet at 9:30am at the upper end of Crescent Drive in Ringwood, NJ. From West Brook Road, turn onto Magee Road, Left up Burnt Meadow Road, and turn on the second left for Crescent Drive. This is a hiking only trail as Jeff pointed out and only a short segment is left to complete between the Lake Sonoma trail and the Hewitt-Butler trail. Only a little over 1/4 mile is left to complete and will complete the loop up to Maniticut Point. The work entails a little chainsaw work (I'll bring mine along), running a power pruner (to cut down the blueberry bushes), clipping, raking, and nailing blazes to the trees.

Please bring:
- work gloves
- lunch/drink
- energy and enthusiasm

We will be clipping, pruning, raking, blazing trees and establishing the trail. Please let me know if you'd like to come so we can have enough tools ready and notify you in the event of cancellation.

Thanks!
Karen Schoof

Junior Development Skills Clinic

Team Somerset will be hosting for the second straight year a Junior Development Skills Clinic. It will be Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater. The registration is already open at https://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=10589 and the link to the flyer is here - http://www.somersetwheelmen.com/downloads/2010ssw_junior_clinic.pdf

This is a great event for those kids that are new to racing this season or did limited racing last season. While the clinic is oriented more towards the newcomer than the experienced racer, there will be something for everyone. There will be a demonstration on how to change a flat tire, giveways, lunch etc. This is a great refresher for kids who forgot what they learned last year. Or have your kids bring a friend who is interested in the sport! It's a fun event for all.

The cost will be $35 for non-licensed riders and $25 for licensed riders.

If anyone is interested in going and wants to carpool, etc., send us an email or leave us a comment, and we'll help you connect.

Easter Bunny rides!

If it's Easter, can real spring be far away? We hope not! The weather is supposed to be amazing this weekend, so we've got a few rides for those of you who want to work off some of the chocolate bunny and jelly beans ahead of time!

  • Friday, April 2. This was already announced, but here's a quick recap for those who missed the first one. It's a Friday night road ride on our fave Friday night route - Clinton Road! We'll start our regular Friday night rides in a few weeks, but in the meantime, here's a preview. We know lots of people have a day off or a half day, so let's meet at the usual place, the Village Square Inn on Route 23 in Newfoundland, at 5 p.m. We'll have an "A" and "B" group, so all levels of riders are welcome!
  • Saturday, April 3. Road ride, leaving Town Cycle at 9 a.m. We'll do a moderate paced ride around Greenwood Lake, and then we'll take a poll if you want to go farther!
  • Saturday, April 3. Mountain Bike ride, Waywayanda. Our ride leader is recovering from a cold, so it will be a beginner paced ride, probably a lap around the Spring Cleaning race course. Meet us at the boat launch parking lot at 11:15 a.m. If we need to cancel, we'll do it here and on Twitter tomorrow.
  • Sunday, April 4. Happy Easter! Before you sit down to your big Easter ham and mashed potatoes, come join us for an Easter Bunny hunting mountain bike ride at Waywayanda. We'll meet at the boat launch parking lot at 9 a.m. It'll be a moderately paced ride, about 2 hours long.
Lots of opportunities for rides for all levels, so come on out and join us!
